Photo by James Kilby.Miho Sawayanagi is originally from Chiba, Japan. She has studied at the Mikuni Ballet, International Ballet Studio and Sapporo City Ballet. She came to the U.S. when she was accepted into the Fellowship program at The Ailey School in NYC. In addition to The Ailey School, Miho attended Earl Mosley’s Institute of the Arts for two consecutive summers. This is her first season with Florida Dance Theatre’s professional company.

Miho started taking ballet classes at Mikuni Ballet in her home town when she was four years old. She began her first real ballet technique classes at the International Ballet Studios in Japan at the age of six.

Miho says, “Dance is where I feel the most happy in my life. I aspire to become a dancer who inspires others and makes the audience feel deeply moved by my movement.”

At age 17, Miho was invited to study at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater by former director Mrs. Denise Jefferson where she was accepted into the prestigious fellowship program.

Miho came to Florida this season after meeting Freddie DeJesus at Earl Mosley Institute of the Arts were she was given a solo in a dance he choreographed. After seeing her perform, he asked Miho to come down and dance with Florida Dance Theatre’s professional company.

Her favorite type of dance is Modern, because it’s the form where she has received the most training. Miho states, “The Modern Graham technique is where I feel most comfortable.”

Miho’s hobbies include watching movies, jamming to music and singing karaoke.

Coming soon…The Firebird

The Firebird is a ballet created by composer Igor Stravinsky and choreographer Michel Fokine. The story is based on Russian folk tales of a magical glowing bird that is both a blessing and a curse to its captor.

The ballet was premiered by the Ballets Russes in Paris on June 25, 1910 to critical acclaim and was a major breakthrough for Stravinsky with the public and critics.

Florida Dance Theatre brings a fresh interpretation of the classic story to the historic Polk Theatre on Saturday May 12 at 7:30 p.m. Also on the program are new works by Associate Director/Resident Choreographer Ferdinand De Jesus, and company member Stefan Dolbashian.

The dance springstep subflooring in the new space will cost approximately $18,750. That doesn’t include the approximately $42,000 in Marley that will be needed to cover the subfloor.

    Suzanne Lovely began her ballet training at the age of five with Patricia Delaney Gilroy in San Antonio, Texas.  She is a graduate from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in Dance and a minor in Communications.  Suzanne has studied at the Joffrey Ballet School (NY), Gus Giordano Dance Studio (Chicago), Boston Ballet School, American Dance Festival (NC) and Steps (NY). Her professional career began by performing as Connie Wong in the Broadway National Tour of A Chorus Line.  She has also performed in New York Moves (off Broadway), Sayonara, South Pacific and in the Broadway National Tour of Beauty and the Beast.  Suzanne has experience in print modeling and has acted in several corporate videos and commercials.  Suzanne currently teaches dance in the Encore Program at Resurrection Catholic School and is excited to be on staff at FDT.

Florida Dance Theatre Artistic & Founding Director Carol Erkes saw the amazing raw talent and dedication even at that age. “She was very focused from the moment she walked in the door. She has her own style that makes you want to watch her. She dances with joy and passion.” She has now been training at Florida Dance Theatre for over 12 years. At age 17, she is now a member of FDT’s professional company.

    A short interview with Erin:

    Why do you dance?
    I feel free when I dance. It’s part of my soul. I love being able to express myself in a way people find enjoyable.

    What is your favorite style of dance?
    I love ballet and working on all the technique and movement necessary for all forms of dance.

    What was your most favorite role?
    I loved playing Clara in the Nutcracker. I hope someday to be able to perform the role of Juliet in Romeo and Juliet and also Odette in Swan Lake.

    Have you received any awards or scholarships?
    Yes, I received scholarships to Orlando Ballet and the Patel Conservatory’s summer intensives. I’ve also received awards from Florida Dance Theatre’s Publix Super Markets Charities scholarships and 2 awards from the Tuesday Music Club’s Francis Beery awards.

    What are your plans for the future?
    Of course I want to continue dancing. I also love teaching both ballet and modern, and I’m really interested in choreography. When I was involved in FDT2, the student ensemble, I had the opportunity to choreograph on my fellow dancers.

    What are your other interests?
    I like to play the piano, do some creative writing and also photography.

    Erin is the daughter of Teri Gavin, ballet faculty member at FDT and musician Joe Gavin. Her sister Alison is also a talented young dancer at FDT.
